As a leader for decades in connecting people to competitive, integrated employment, Kaposia, an employment services provider in Minnesota, has upended the traditional job search process. Instead of trying to fit a person with disabilities into an existing job, Kaposia learns the person’s interests and abilities and then approaches a community employer about customizing a competitive-wage job that suits the person’s strengths. Customized employment depends on person-centered practices, and successful job placement and development varies from situation to situation. In customized employment, successful jobs are developed, not found.
