A brief offering a second look at the 1997-2004 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) and its usefulness in describing the characteristics and needs of persons with intellectual or developmental disabilities (ID/DD) in the non-institutionalized U.S. population. This issue describes the authors' attempt to create an operational definition of intellectual and developmental disability using the NHIS surveys.
