Description

For decades, Udac offered center-based employment opportunities that paid subminimum wages to employees with disabilities, which is legal under federal law. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic spurred Udac to look critically at their organization and develop a plan to create a new person-centered, innovation service model. Udac closed all center-based services and shifted to providing support for people to find competitive, integrated employment and to engage with their communities. These new opportunities have improved the lives of people with disabilities by offering them better pay, benefits, job satisfaction, and career and social opportunities. This change also transformed how Udac staff and the families of people receiving supports appreciate the strengths of people with disabilities.
