FYI from the Institute on Community Integration: September 2021

Description

FYI  is a monthly e-communication from the Institute on Community Integration. The September 2021 issue includes four feature stories, an ICI Facebook post, new publications, staff updates, and an alumni update.

The first story features the latest Impact and this issue covers art careers for people with intellectual, developmental, and other disabilities. The second feature story is about videos from ICI's National Center on Educational Outcomes and TIES Center that help parents support their children returning to in-person and virtual classrooms. The third feature story is about a new project that aims to improve communication and challenging behavior using a supplemental model of support while families wait (sometimes for years) for formal autism evaluation or intervention; those early years are critical because the infant brain is still developing and invention can be very effective in that time window. The fouth story is about the National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals presenting the John F. Kennedy, Jr. Award for Direct Support Workforce Advocacy & Leadership to Jerry Smith, ICI’s marketing and business development manager, who has directed dozens of films about community living for people with disabilities. This month's Alumni Update features Zephyr James (MNLEND, 2018–19), community engagement manager at the Autism Society of Minnesota, who will address the current class of Minnesota Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities fellows.
