Transitioning from high school to adult life is a long-anticipated step and comes with big changes. Young people develop and try out the skills and knowledge they need to work, study further, live more independently, stay healthy and happy, and feel comfortable in their communities.

For young adults with disabilities, this transition can take extra planning and support. Finding the right education or training, getting job experience, finding a place to live, and navigating health care and community spaces can feel overwhelming for both young people and their families.

The Institute on Community Integration (ICI) brings research and community-based expertise to every part of the journey — from transition planning and assessments to service coordination, work-based learning, and staff training, so young adults can move forward with confidence.

Staff at ICI offer a multidisciplinary lens at the transition process, experiences, and outcomes, including special and inclusive education, school psychology, adult disability services, educational leadership, behavioral health, assessment, and other perspectives, bringing in local, national, and international expertise.
