Cliff Poetz works for the University of Minnesota Institute on Community Integration Research and Training Center on Community Living as a community liaison where he does community outreach for a number of projects. He is an advisor for the Self-Advocacy Online web page, reviews content for the College of Direct Support and lends his expertise to the Minnesota Citizens Consortium on Disability. He is a past member of the Board of The Arc, Arc Minnesota, and Interact Theatre. He has also been a board member for People First Minnesota, Advocating Change Together, the Minnesota State Council on Disability, and the Minnesota Association for Persons with Severe Handicaps (MNASH). On the The Arc’s board, he has been a member of the Futures Committee to help shape decisions on the future of the national organization. As a People First Minnesota board member, he served a term as President. He has spoken at Arc Minnesota state conventions, at self-advocacy gatherings in Minnesota and in other parts of the U.S. (including workshops at People First International’s Conference and the national conference for the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disability). He has worked with other self-advocates who want to form their own Self Advocacy groups. In 2000, Poetz received the Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. Foundation Self-Empowerment Award for his pioneering efforts to promote self-advocacy among people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
