Promoting Relationships with Community Members: What are the Best Strategies?

Report description

A report summarizing the results of a project that compared two different methods of promoting greater social inclusion between individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (I/DD) and other community members: staff training versus an independent community builder who was not an agency staff person. The four-year project, which ran from 2009 to 2013, started with 135 residents in 39 homes, and demonstrated that either approach can succeed. The staff training approach established a greater overall number of social relationships, partly because there was more consistent effort in these homes and more opportunities for reporting; however, the most successful avenue of all was an independent community builder working in their own community.
