Community Members' Perspectives on Inclusion: Membership of Persons with Developmental Disabilities in Community Organizations

A report covering a study about the degree of membership of people with intellectual/developmental disabilities in community organizations, and community members' perceptions of such inclusion. Efforts to increase the social inclusion of individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities have included recommendations to support membership in community groups and organizations. However, while such recommendations have been made for more than 20 years, there is virtually no information regarding the extent of current membership of such individuals in these community groups and organizations. In this study, surveys were sent to community groups in four states in four different regions of the U.S. inquiring about group membership of individuals with disabilities in general, group members' experiences with individuals with developmental disabilities in their groups, and the benefits and challenges of having individuals with developmental disabilities as members.
