ICI and States Study Alternate Assessments Based on Modified Achievement Standards
(June 2008)
Students who receive special education services can participate in statewide assessments used for accountability purposes in several different ways. Most participate in the regular assessment, with or without accommodations. A few participate in an alternate assessment based on alternate achievement standards (AA-AAS). However, there may be some students with disabilities whose knowledge and skills are not well assessed with these options. To address this issue the Federal government finalized regulations in April 2007 that gave states flexibility to offer another assessment option: an alternate assessment based on modified achievement standards (AA-MAS). ...

ICI and Community Groups Partner on Zambian Project

The Institute on Community Integration (ICI) is partnering with four community organizations (Arc Greater Twin Cities, Fraser, St. David’s Child Development and Family Services, and Opportunity Partners) to provide advanced leadership training in disability policy and services for a delegation of nine government officials, missionaries, educators, and advocates from Zambia in southern Africa. Titled the “Twin Cities and Zambia Disability Connection,” the project was launched with a visit to the Twin Cities by the Zambian delegation for a two-week intensive learning residency from March 28-April 13. ...

Welcome Back: ICI's NCEO Returns to Pattee Hall

The walls have been painted lavender and green, new carpet has been laid, and the movers are on their way. This week the Institute on Community Integration (ICI) welcomes back to Pattee Hall its National Center on Educational Outcomes (NCEO). This ICI-affiliated center has been housed in Elliott Hall for nearly 15 years, and is now returning to the building where it began in 1990. RTC and NASDDDS Launch Web Tool to Assess Emergency Preparedness
(January 2008)
In the weeks following hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the National Association of State Directors of Developmental Disabilities Services (NASDDDS) began compiling emergency preparedness resources and information to share with state disability agency officials nationwide as they assessed states’ emergency response plans and capabilities in relation to people with disabilities.
