The Expanding the Circle tranings are a unique and valuable resource that provide participants with insight and strategies on how to implement the Expanding the Circle curriculum in their school, organization, or community. Workshop presenters are curriculum co-authors Jean Ness and Dennis Olson (read presenter bios). The workshops are held in the beautiful McNamara Alumni Center located on the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis.
Introducing "Finding Our Voice"!
We are thrilled to add a new component to the ETC
training, our new video, Finding Our Voice. Finding Our Voice tells the story
of American Indian students who are a part of ETC programs at the University of Minnesota. Students were filmed participating in unique, hands-on, experiential activities related to essential transition skills. The video highlights four students — Brian, Valerie, Geno, and Brenda — who share their experiences of positive personal growth and how their self-advocacy and goal-setting skills give them the confidence to make good decisions and to be leaders in their communities. During the ETC training, participants will have an opportunity to view
Finding Our Voice and learn how they can use the video and it's Resource Guide to enhance their own transition programs. See more about the Finding Our Voice Video DVD.

Theme One: The Discovery
Presenters will explore activities from the curriculum that engage students in exploring and learning about who they are, what kind of personal expectations they have for themselves, who the key members of their family/community are that act as a support system for them, and how they learn. Using the information they acquire, students examine how this information is related to their world, how they respond to change, and how to identify and handle risk factors.

Video: Finding Our Voice
Theme Two: The Framework
Presenters will demonstrate curriculum activities that focus on the foundational skills and information students need when making their own plans for the future. This theme includes activities that allow students to explore specific skills in the areas of problem-solving, self-advocacy, communication, diversity awareness, goal-setting, and organization. |

Theme Three: The Choice
Presenters will focus on curriculum activities designed to allow students to explore various post-high school options. These options are examined based on what students have learned about themselves in Themes One and Two. In this theme, students learn about the concept of life planning and explore postsecondary educational, career, and military options based on their understanding of themselves and what they value. The Choice exposes students to the many options available and allows for the development of a plan for the choices that best suit them. |

Theme Four: The Reflection
Presenters will discuss culminating activities to be used as reflection on the skills learned and concepts explored during other themes of the curriculum. The final exercises in the curriculum give students the opportunity to share what they have learned as they prepare for the future. |

Strategies for Program Implementation
Presenters will review various applications and implementation models for the Expanding the Circle curriculum. The curriculum is currently being utilized by educational settings including middle school, high school, and postsecondary education. |

Cost: $350 Per Participant
Fee includes one copy of the Expanding the Circle curriculum, one copy of the video "Finding Our Voice," continental breakfast, and lunch for both days of the workshop. Participants are responsible for their own travel arrangements. Cost of travel, lodging, and additional meals are not included as part of this event.

Lodging is available for $72/night plus tax at the Days Inn near the McNamara Alumni Center. Call 612-623-9303 and ask for the Expanding the Circle room block. Hotel reservation deadline is September 8, 2008.

CEUs and College Credit
CEUs are awarded to those who complete the entire training. Undergraduate/graduate credits are also available. Please call for more information.
Important Information
- You must arrange your own transportation and overnight lodging.
- In order to receive training on the entire curriculum, it is essential for you to be present from start to finish on each day of the training. Please plan your travel accordingly.
- Dress is casual!
