Study 4: Alternative Schools - Synthesis and Recommendations

Information Synthesis and Recommendations

Purpose

This study will be a synthesis of the information gathered at the national, state and local level. We will have a broad description of what is happening across our nation as well as specific data gathered directly from students with disabilities who are attending alternative schools. After these pieces have been gathered, it is critical that a synthesis of this data be conducted.

Study 4 will synthesize information about:

  • whether and how alternative schools are changing in terms of their defining characteristics, approaches etc.
  • the degree to which and how students with disabilities are being served in alternative schools.
  • whether and how the needs of students with disabilities are being met in alternative schools.
  • special education processes and procedures in place for students with disabilities.
  • the impact of IDEA (1997) on alternative schools.
  • outcomes for students with disabilities attending alternative schools.

Activities

Activity 1. Information gathered from across the nation, within states and from individual alternative schools will be synthesized and recommendations will be developed to guide policy, practices and further study.

As these project activities are completed, findings and products will be posted on this Web site.
