 All Means All

Question 33

I work with the School-to-Career Partnership in Sonoma County, California. In reviewing your very comprehensive web page I was wondering if you could help me connect specifically with projects that have been successful in the Alternative Education area. I would be interested in contacting the projects that have implemented programs that are successfully impacting this population. Thanks.

STW Wizard Strategies

Strategy 1

You might want to check in with Junior Achievement (www.ja.org) in your area. The J.A. program in Mankato has been working with our Alternative School kids with much success. The curriculum materials (they are national) are lively and I think the students enjoy the change of pace when having business representatives come into the classroom. I attended a board meeting this morning and they introduced a national idea to design "model cities" where students will (for a day) be the bankers, grocers, stock brokers, real estate developers, everything. It sounds like fun--worth checking out!

Strategy 2

I have worked for the past 15 years in the Auburn, Maine High School Alternative program as a science teacher and a math teacher. This program has a great philosophy and is a self directed program which enables students to work at the same time as they attain their regular diplomas. There is a parenting component and a partnership with a local hospital that provides CNA training. This partnership leads to permanent jobs for some. In the past I have also led some environmental projects with collaboration with the community. The web site can be reached by going to http://www.auburnschl.edu, then Franklin School. Hope it helps!
