 All Means All

Question 25

In Nebraska, we are at the 65% (of all school districts) having implemented School-to-Work (STW). Now, I am looking for actual CIMs and/or CAMs that are being used across the country. Alternatively, draft or proposed CIMs/CAMs would be useful. Can you help identify for me any of which you are aware?

CIMs are certificates of initial mastery and CAMs are certificates of advanced mastery. These are the ones suggested by Tucker and NCEE in the agenda to reinvent schools into STW sites. SCANS people are developing SCANS certificates. I believe other names they go by are certificate of technical mastery, certificate of proficiency, etc. The name is less important than the concept - a document that is a portable workplace certificate showing mastery of workplace competencies employers want ... essentially, demonstrating the SCANS competencies are mastered and the child is ready for the employer/workplace. Aren't the WorkKeys people also developing something?

I've heard that but I can't get any documents yet from ACT. The only ones I have been able to locate so far are Oregon's. It's hard to believe we are this far along in Nebraska and ready to look at CIM/CAMs and they do not yet exist in numbers elsewhere. Are we, for once, in the lead (:O) of both coasts?

STW Wizard Strategies

Strategy 1

Minnesota Graduation Standards (Profile of Learning or High Standards) will be our method of addressing learner performance.

Please call Beth Aune 612/296-4072 for a packet of information on the High Standards for K-12 students in Minnesota.

Strategy 2

There are several states across the country developing a Certicifate of Mastery high school accredation system. The ones that we are aware of include: Indiana, Maine, Massechusetts, New York, Oregon, Vermont and Washington. As far as we know, Oregon is the only state that is already awarding the certificates. However, states such as Washington and Vermont, have plans (or proposals) to implement "certificates of mastery" by the year 2000.

To access information on what the other states mentioned above are doing in regard to this subject, contact their state School-to-Work Director.
